E. Avalos, D.W. Huang and W.N Huang. We propose a cellular automaton to simulate the traffic in cities in afternoon rush hours. The objective of this project is to optimize the travel time and traffic flow in urban and suburban environments. Within the city the traffic is regulated by the operation of traffic lights, which have a green/red cycle of period T, and there is a delay between consecutive traffic lights. We discuss some strategies to optimize travel time and traffic flow. Peer-reviewed paper here.
